Frequently asked questions

What do the CQC ratings Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement and Inadequate mean?
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. It awards each rated service one of four overall ratings: Outstanding (the service performs exceptionally well), Good (it meets CQC standards), Requires improvement (it is not performing as well as it should) and Inadequate (it is performing badly and CQC has taken action). The rating is a categorical judgement, not a number, and Gera reports it exactly as CQC published it.
How many CQC-rated services in England are rated Good or Outstanding?
As of 1 June 2026, 86.8% of the 30,717 CQC-rated care homes, homecare agencies, GP practices, hospitals and mental health services in England covered by this dataset are rated Good or Outstanding: 1,516 Outstanding (4.9%), 25,135 Good (81.8%), 3,867 Requires improvement (12.6%) and 199 Inadequate (0.6%). What is the Gera Provider Quality Score?
The Gera Provider Quality Score (GPQS) is a single 0-100 figure Gera computes from the real CQC rating distribution for a service type or region. Each rating is weighted (Outstanding 4, Good 3, Requires improvement 2, Inadequate 1), the weighted mean is rescaled onto 0-100, and the result is published openly. England-wide it is 63.7 out of 100. It is a transparent summary of CQC ratings, not a Gera rating of any individual provider β€” CQC remains the sole rating authority.
How often are CQC ratings updated?
CQC publishes its Care directory with ratings open data on a rolling basis, refreshing the spreadsheet roughly monthly, and an individual location’s rating changes whenever a new inspection report is published. This dataset is the 1 June 2026 snapshot; Gera re-dates these pages when CQC publishes a new directory file.
