eGFR Calculator (CKD-EPI 2021, race-free)
Estimates glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from serum creatinine, age and sex using the race-free 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation now recommended by the National Kidney Foundation and ASN.
Quick answer
eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) estimates how well the kidneys filter, in mL/min/1.73 m². This calculator uses the race-free 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation recommended by the National Kidney Foundation. An eGFR of 60 or above is generally normal; under 60 for over three months defines chronic kidney disease.

How to use the eGFR (CKD-EPI 2021) calculator
- 1Enter creatinine, age and sex. Enter the serum creatinine (choose mg/dL or µmol/L), age, and sex.
- 2Read the eGFR. The tool applies the 2021 CKD-EPI equation (eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ,1)^α × max(Scr/κ,1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age × 1.012 if female) and shows the result.
- 3See the CKD stage. The tool maps the value to a KDIGO stage (G1–G5) to discuss with a clinician.

What is a normal eGFR?⌄
An eGFR of 90 or above (G1) is normal, and 60–89 (G2) is mildly reduced but still considered normal kidney function if there are no other markers of kidney damage. Persistently under 60 for over three months defines chronic kidney disease.
Why does the 2021 equation remove race?⌄
The 2021 CKD-EPI equation removed the race coefficient used in older equations to provide a single, race-free estimate, as recommended by the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology.
Is eGFR exact?⌄
It is an estimate. It is less reliable at extremes of muscle mass, in pregnancy, in acute kidney injury, in amputees, and in people under 18. A clinician interprets it alongside other tests.
What is the difference between eGFR and creatinine clearance?⌄
eGFR (CKD-EPI) is normalised to a standard 1.73 m² body surface area and is used for staging CKD. Cockcroft-Gault creatinine clearance uses actual body weight and is often used for drug dosing. They can give different numbers.
