CHA₂DS₂-VASc Score Calculator
The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score estimates annual stroke risk in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, to help guide anticoagulation decisions. It scores eight clinical factors from 0 to 9 points.
Quick answer
CHA₂DS₂-VASc scores eight factors (heart failure, hypertension, age, diabetes, prior stroke/TIA, vascular disease, sex) from 0 to 9 to estimate stroke risk in atrial fibrillation. A higher score means higher stroke risk and supports considering anticoagulation.
Patient factors
Borderline / low risk
A CHA₂DS₂-VASc of 1 places this profile in the borderline / low risk band. The score guides whether long-term oral anticoagulation is considered in atrial fibrillation — the decision is your clinician's, weighed against bleeding risk (see HAS-BLED).
Published per-point annual stroke-risk percentages vary by cohort, so this tool reports the guideline risk band rather than a single percentage. Confirm with the 2023 ACC/AHA AF guideline.
How to use the CHA₂DS₂-VASc calculator
- 1Enter age and sex. Type the patient age (the tool adds 1 point for 65–74 and 2 points for 75 or older) and select sex (female adds 1 point).
- 2Tick the clinical factors. Tick heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, prior stroke/TIA/thromboembolism (2 points), and vascular disease as they apply.
- 3Read the score and risk band. The tool totals the points (0–9) and shows the guideline risk band to discuss anticoagulation with a clinician.

What is a high CHA₂DS₂-VASc score?⌄
The score runs 0–9. A score of 0 (men) or 1 (women, from sex alone) is low risk; 2 or more is generally considered elevated risk where oral anticoagulation is usually discussed. Your clinician interprets it with your bleeding risk.
Does CHA₂DS₂-VASc decide whether I need blood thinners?⌄
No. It is one input. The decision balances the stroke-risk band against bleeding risk (for example HAS-BLED), your preferences and other factors, and is made with a clinician.
Why does being female add a point?⌄
In the derivation data, female sex was an independent stroke-risk modifier in atrial fibrillation, mainly at older ages and with other risk factors. Female sex alone (score of 1) is treated as low risk.
Is my data stored?⌄
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; nothing you enter is sent to a server.
