Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) Calculator
The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is the number of neutrophils per microlitre of blood: ANC = white-cell count × (percent segmented neutrophils + percent band neutrophils) ÷ 100. It is used to grade neutropenia, with an ANC under 500 /µL defining severe neutropenia and a high infection risk.
Quick answer
The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is the white-cell count multiplied by the combined percentage of segmented and band neutrophils, divided by 100. It grades neutropenia: 1000–1499 /µL is mild, 500–999 /µL moderate, and under 500 /µL severe with a high risk of infection. An ANC of 1500 /µL or more is normal.
Differential
Enter the white-cell count in cells per microlitre (/µL). If your laboratory reports ×10⁹/L, multiply by 1000 first. Segmented plus band percentages must not exceed 100%.
How to use the ANC calculator
- 1Enter the white-cell count. Enter the total white-cell count in cells per microlitre (for example, 4500).
- 2Enter the neutrophil percentages. Enter the percentage of segmented (mature) neutrophils and the percentage of band (immature) neutrophils from the differential.
- 3Read the ANC and grade. The tool multiplies the white-cell count by the combined neutrophil percentage to give the ANC, and shows the neutropenia band. A clinician acts on the result.

What ANC counts as severe neutropenia?⌄
An absolute neutrophil count under 500 /µL is severe neutropenia and carries a high risk of serious infection; many protocols treat fever in this range as a medical emergency (neutropenic sepsis). A clinician manages it urgently.
Should bands be included in the ANC?⌄
Yes. The standard ANC includes both segmented (mature) and band (immature) neutrophils, so the formula uses the sum of their percentages. Some laboratories report only segmented neutrophils, which slightly lowers the count.
Does the ANC depend on the units of the white-cell count?⌄
The result is in the same unit you enter the white-cell count in. This tool expects cells per microlitre (/µL); if your laboratory reports ×10⁹/L, multiply by 1000 first. A clinician confirms the units.
Is my data stored?⌄
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; nothing you enter is sent to a server.
