A named, reproducible measure of how easy it is for patients to get in touch with their GP practice in England — built from the real GP Patient Survey 2025. Access is the part of the GP experience patients score lowest, and this index isolates it.

What the index measures

The Gera GP Access Index is the equal-weighted average of three patient-reported access measures from the GP Patient Survey 2025: the share of patients who had a good overall experience contacting their practice (69.6%), who found it easy to get through on the phone (52.9%), and who found their practice website easy to use (51%). Averaged, that gives an England index of 57.8 / 100 for 2025. It summarises official NHS England statistics with a fully published method — it is not a Gera survey, and not a rating of any individual practice.

The index rose +2.8 points between the 2024 and 2025 surveys — a real improvement on every component — yet at 57.8 / 100 it remains far below the 75.4% of patients who rate their practice good overall. Getting through is still the hardest part of using a GP.

How easy is it to get through to a GP on the phone in England?
In the GP Patient Survey 2025, 52.9% of patients said it was easy to get through to their GP practice on the phone, up from 49.7% in 2024. It is the lowest-scoring of the three access measures in the index.
Where does the data come from and can I check my own practice?
All figures are from the GP Patient Survey 2025 — National Results (NHS England), based on 702,837 responses (25.8% response rate) collected 30 December 2024–1 April 2025 by Ipsos for NHS England, published 10 July 2025 under the Open Government Licence v3.0. The survey reports results for all 42 Integrated Care Boards and around 6,400 GP practices — you can look up your own ICB or practice at gp-patient.co.uk.
Is the Gera GP Access Index an official NHS figure?
No. The underlying percentages are official NHS England statistics, but the index itself is Gera's own transparent summary of them — an equal-weighted average, published with its full method so it can be independently reproduced and checked.
