Frequently asked questions

How is "best hospitals in a city" decided here?
Each city page lists the hospitals in that city that hold a CMS Overall Star Rating of 4 or 5 (the official U.S. government quality rating), ordered by the Gera US Hospital Quality Index (GUHQI) β€” a transparent 0–100 composite of CMS star rating, mortality, readmission and HCAHPS outcomes. Only cities with 2 or more such hospitals get a page, so every page compares real alternatives. As of April 2026.
Where does the hospital data come from?
Every rating is from the CMS Hospital Care Compare "Hospital General Information" dataset (identifier xubh-q36u), published by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) β€” a U.S. federal government work in the public domain. No figure is estimated or fabricated.
Why is my city not listed?
A city only appears if it has at least 2 hospitals rated 4 or 5 stars by CMS in the April 2026 dataset. Cities with one or zero top-rated hospitals are intentionally excluded to avoid thin comparisons. You can still find any single hospital in the per-hospital US Hospital Quality Index, or browse your whole state.
Is this a Gera endorsement of these hospitals?
No. This is a transparent, reproducible summary of publicly available CMS government ratings. CMS ratings can be several months old and do not reflect every aspect of care. Always check the latest detail on CMS Hospital Care Compare and consult your own clinician before any healthcare decision.
