GMC English-language requirements: IELTS, OET and exemptions
Before it will register you, the GMC requires evidence that your English is good enough to practise safely — most doctors provide an IELTS Academic or OET result, though several exemption routes exist.

What IELTS or OET score does the GMC require?
The GMC accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum of 7.5 overall and no individual section below 7.0, or the OET at grade B in all four skills in a single sitting. Doctors whose qualification was taught and examined in English, or who have recent English-language clinical practice, may qualify for an exemption. Confirm the current thresholds on gmc-uk.org, as they can change.
This is free information only, for internationally-qualified doctors who, of their own accord, want to understand the UK registration route. GeraClinic (Gera Services Ltd) is a telemedicine platform, not a recruitment agency: we do not place doctors into UK jobs, we do not actively recruit from countries on the WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards List (which includes Pakistan and Bangladesh), and we never charge you a fee for finding work. You always apply to UK employers yourself, on your own account.
The two accepted tests
Most applicants evidence their English through one of two tests. The GMC sets the minimum scores and the acceptable evidence, and a result is generally accepted for a limited period (commonly around two years) — always confirm the current rule before you rely on an older result.
- IELTS Academic: minimum 7.5 overall, with at least 7.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
- OET (Occupational English Test): minimum grade B in all four sub-tests, achieved in a single sitting.
Exemption routes
You may not need to sit a test at all if you can evidence your English another way. The GMC publishes the exact conditions — these are the two most common exemptions.
- Primary-qualification exemption: your medical degree was taught and examined solely in English, is recent, and involved substantial English-language clinical interaction.
- Recent-practice exemption: you have worked in a medical role for the preceding two years in a country the GMC accepts as majority English-speaking, evidenced by an employer reference.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for the GMC?+
The GMC requires IELTS Academic with at least 7.5 overall and no section below 7.0. This is an indicative snapshot — confirm the current requirement on the GMC’s English-evidence page before you book a test.
Does the GMC accept OET instead of IELTS?+
Yes. The GMC accepts OET at grade B in all four skills, taken in a single sitting, as an alternative to IELTS Academic. Both are widely used by internationally-qualified doctors.
Can I be exempt from the English test?+
Sometimes. If your medical qualification was taught and examined solely in English and is recent, or you have two recent years of medical practice in an accepted majority-English-speaking country, you may qualify for an exemption. The GMC sets the exact conditions.
