Medication Class Reference Guide

Analgesics (pain relievers)

What it is: Medicines that reduce pain. Includes simple analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Generally used for: General pain, headache, inflammation, fever.

Common forms: Tablets, capsules, liquids, topical gels.

Antibiotics

What it is: Medicines that treat bacterial infections. They do not work against viruses such as colds or flu.

Generally used for: Bacterial infections, prescribed by a clinician.

Common forms: Tablets, capsules, liquids, injections.

Antihypertensives

What it is: A group of medicines used to lower blood pressure, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium-channel blockers and diuretics.

Generally used for: High blood pressure and some heart conditions.

Common forms: Tablets, capsules.

Antihistamines

What it is: Medicines that block histamine to reduce allergy symptoms.

Generally used for: Hay fever, hives, allergic reactions.

Common forms: Tablets, liquids, nasal sprays, eye drops.

Antidiabetics

What it is: Medicines that help control blood glucose, including metformin and insulin.

Generally used for: Type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Common forms: Tablets, injectable pens, insulin.

Statins

What it is: Medicines that lower cholesterol production in the liver.

Generally used for: High cholesterol and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Common forms: Tablets.

Inhaled bronchodilators & steroids

What it is: Inhaled medicines that open the airways or reduce airway inflammation.

Generally used for: Asthma and COPD.

Common forms: Inhalers, nebuliser solutions.

Antidepressants

What it is: Medicines that affect brain chemistry to help mood and anxiety, including SSRIs and SNRIs.

Generally used for: Depression, anxiety and related conditions.

Common forms: Tablets, capsules, liquids.
