English Language Evidence: IELTS and OET for Indian Doctors
Before the GMC will register you, you must evidence your knowledge of English. For most India-qualified doctors that means IELTS Academic or the OET. This page sets out the scores the GMC accepts, how long they last, and how the English requirement fits with PLAB and your visa.
Figures and rules on this page were last checked against their official sources in July 2026 and are reviewed by their issuers periodically — confirm the current position at the linked sources before you rely on any figure.
The accepted scores
| Test | GMC requirement |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Overall score of 7.5, with a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four sections |
| OET (Occupational English Test) — Medicine | At least grade B in each of the four sub-tests |

IELTS or OET — which to choose?
Both are accepted, so the choice usually comes down to which format suits you. IELTS Academic is a general academic English test used for many purposes, which makes preparation material abundant. The OET is built specifically around healthcare scenarios — its reading, writing and speaking tasks use clinical contexts — which many doctors find more natural. There is no GMC preference between them; pick the one you are more likely to pass at the required level first time.
Timing it right
English results have a limited validity window and usually need to be in date both when you apply for PLAB and again when you apply for registration. Sitting the test too early can mean it expires before you finish PLAB 2; leaving it too late can hold up your PLAB 1 booking. Map your English test date against your intended PLAB dates so the result stays valid across the whole process. The GMC’s pages give the current validity and combining rules.
Frequently asked questions
Do India-qualified doctors need an English test for GMC registration?
You must evidence your knowledge of English to the GMC. Many India-qualified doctors do this by taking IELTS Academic or the OET. In some cases English evidence can be provided in other ways the GMC accepts (for example certain qualifications taught and examined in English), but a recognised test is the most common route. Check the GMC’s current list of accepted evidence.
What IELTS score do I need?
For IELTS Academic the GMC requires an overall score of 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four sections (reading, writing, listening and speaking). All four sections normally need to be achieved in the same sitting, or within the GMC’s combining rules — verify the current policy on the GMC website.
What OET result do I need?
For the OET (Occupational English Test), Medicine version, the GMC requires at least a grade B in each of the four sub-tests. As with IELTS, check the GMC’s current combining and validity rules.
How long is my English test valid?
English test results have a validity window (commonly two years) and generally need to be in date both when you apply for PLAB and when you apply for registration. Because the exact validity and combining rules change, confirm them on the GMC pages before you book a test date, so your result does not expire mid-process.
Is the English test the same one my visa needs?
The GMC’s English requirement and the Home Office’s visa English requirement are separate rules. A test that satisfies the GMC will often help with the visa too, but they are set by different bodies with different thresholds. Plan for both, and read the GMC and GOV.UK requirements side by side rather than assuming one covers the other.
Practise remotely while you prepare
Preparing for UK registration takes time. GeraClinic is a separate remote telemedicine platform where doctors who hold valid NMC / State Medical Council registration in India can consult with patients online, set their own hours and fee, and keep clinical skills sharp — from home, around exam preparation. It is not connected to your GMC application or any UK role.
