UK registration for EU / EEA-qualified dentists
Brexit changed how European dental qualifications are treated by the GDC. This page explains β as neutral information, not a recruitment offer β what changed and how EEA and Swiss-qualified dentists now approach UK registration.
Since the UK left the EU, EEA and Swiss dental qualifications are assessed by the GDC rather than automatically recognised. Depending on that assessment, an EEA-qualified dentist may be able to register directly, or may need to pass the ORE or LDS β always after evidencing English (typically IELTS Academic 7). Registration is the right to practise; employment is arranged separately. As of July 2026.
What Brexit changed for dentists
For years, the free movement rules meant that dental qualifications from across the European Economic Area were, broadly, automatically recognised for GDC registration. That automatic recognition ended when the UK left the EU. The GDC now assesses EEA and Swiss qualifications rather than accepting them by default. In practice this means an EEA-qualified dentist can no longer assume a frictionless transfer: some will still register directly following assessment, while others will find that the route is the same UK qualifying examination β the ORE or the LDS β that other internationally-qualified dentists take.
Assessment first β do not assume
The single most useful thing an EEA or Swiss-qualified dentist can do is confirm their own position with the GDC before making plans. The outcome depends on your specific qualification and when it was obtained, and the post-Brexit arrangements have continued to evolve. Two dentists from the same country with different degrees, or the same degree from different years, can end up on different routes. Treat general summaries β including this one β as orientation, and get your individual answer from the regulator.
English is still required
European dentists sometimes expect to be exempt from English testing. The requirement applies regardless of country: the GDC needs evidence you can practise safely in English, and the established benchmark is IELTS (Academic) 7 overall with no less than 6.5 per component, or an accepted alternative such as the OET. Evidence of English-medium study may be considered in some cases, but plan to evidence English formally unless the GDC confirms otherwise.
Cost and reward, honestly
If your assessment leads to the ORE, budget the same way any overseas applicant should: exam fees, English testing, document certification, and β for ORE Part 2, which is sat in the UK β travel and accommodation, plus the GDC application and registration fees. Our ORE pathway page sets out the 2026 fees, and the UK dentist pay page explains what registration is worth, including the reality that most NHS associate income is self-employed and net-of-costs rather than a salary.
GeraClinicβs role here
This page is information, nothing more. GeraClinic does not recruit or place dentists, does not advertise UK vacancies to dentists in the EEA, and never charges an applicant a fee. Any decision to pursue UK registration is entirely your own, made directly with the GDC, and any application to a specific post once registered is arranged directly with the employer.
Which route is likely to apply to you?
Answer two questions for an indicative pointer. This is general information, not an eligibility decision β only the GDC decides.
Frequently asked questions
Can EU dentists still register with the GDC after Brexit?
Yes. Since the UK left the EU, EEA and Swiss dental qualifications are assessed by the GDC rather than being automatically recognised. Depending on the assessment, an EEA-qualified dentist may register directly or may need to pass a UK qualifying exam β the ORE or the LDS. Confirm your own position with the GDC.
Do EU-qualified dentists need the ORE?
Not always, but increasingly some do. Automatic recognition of EEA qualifications ended when the UK left the EU, so the GDC now assesses each qualification. Where a qualification is not accepted for direct registration, the ORE or LDS is the route.
Do EU dentists need to prove English?
Yes. English evidence is required regardless of country. The established benchmark is IELTS (Academic) 7 overall with no less than 6.5 per component, or an accepted alternative such as the OET, though evidence of English-medium study may be considered in some cases.
Is GeraClinic recruiting EU dentists?
No. GeraClinic is not a recruitment agency, does not place dentists, does not market UK vacancies, and never charges applicants a fee. This is neutral educational information for EEA-qualified dentists researching the pathway independently.
