India vs the Philippines for UK Nurse Registration (NMC Route)
Nurses educated in India and in the Philippines both reach the UK register through the same Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) process: a qualification and identity check, the Test of Competence (a computer-based test, the CBT, followed by a practical OSCE taken in the UK), English-language evidence (IELTS or OET), and a good-standing check. The steps are identical; the practical differences are in English evidence, test-centre access and documentation. Both India and the Philippines are permitted source countries β this page is information for nurses applying independently, not recruitment. Confirm every current requirement and fee on nmc.org.uk.

The process is the same β the paperwork is where India and the Philippines differ
For both countries the NMC journey is identical in structure: create an NMC account, have your qualification and identity verified, pass the CBT, evidence your English, travel to the UK for the OSCE, and complete registration. Nothing about the tests themselves is country-specific β the CBT and OSCE are the same worldwide.
The differences are administrative. Each countryβs good-standing verification comes from a different authority (Indian nursing regulators versus the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission), and the documentary evidence you gather differs accordingly. Building the correct document set early, and getting official verifications sent directly to the NMC, is the part that most often slows applicants down.
English evidence: the most common variable
Both routes require English at the NMCβs level, evidenced through IELTS Academic or OET, unless you meet one of the NMCβs alternative evidence routes. Many Indian and Philippine nurses trained substantially in English and may be able to use a non-test route, but the criteria are strict and decided by the NMC. Because this is the requirement applicants most often underestimate, confirm exactly what the NMC will accept for your circumstances before you book β or pay for β a test.
This is information, not recruitment
India and the Philippines are both permitted source countries under the UK Code of Practice for the International Recruitment of Health and Social Care Personnel. This page exists to help nurses who are independently researching UK registration; it does not market a specific UK vacancy, does not match candidates to employers, and Gera is not a recruitment agency. You apply to the NMC, and to any employer, directly and of your own accord. Gera does not actively recruit from any country on the WHO 2023 Safeguards List.

Frequently asked questions
Is UK nurse registration different for Indian and Filipino nurses?
The NMC process β qualification check, CBT, OSCE, English evidence and good-standing check β is the same for both. What differs is the paperwork: the good-standing verification comes from different national authorities, and the exact English-evidence route can vary by applicant. Confirm the current requirements on nmc.org.uk.
Do I take the CBT in my home country or in the UK?
The CBT (computer-based test) can usually be taken in your home country at an approved centre or online under proctoring, before you travel. The OSCE (the practical exam) must be taken at an approved centre in the UK. This applies to nurses from both India and the Philippines.
Do Indian or Filipino nurses always need IELTS or OET?
Not always. The NMC accepts English evidence through IELTS or OET, or through defined alternative routes (for example qualifications taught and examined in English, or recent practice in a majority-English-speaking setting). The criteria are strict and decided by the NMC, so check your eligibility before booking a test.
Does Gera recruit nurses from India or the Philippines?
No. This is free educational information for nurses applying to the NMC on their own account. Gera is not a recruitment agency, does not market specific UK vacancies, and does not match candidates to employers. Individuals apply to the NMC and to employers directly.
