The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. Every GP surgery, dentist, clinic, hospital and care home must be registered with the CQC to operate. This directory covers 40,820 CQC-registered providers across 146 local authorities and 143 areas, using official CQC data (as of 2026-06-12).

CQC registration confirms a provider is legally allowed to deliver regulated health or care activities in England. Where the CQC has inspected a provider it also publishes a rating — Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement or Inadequate (a category, not a star score). What the CQC ratings mean

  • Outstanding: the service is performing exceptionally well.
  • Good: the service is performing well and meeting expectations.
  • Requires improvement: the service is not performing as well as it should.
  • Inadequate: the service is performing badly and action has been taken.

CQC ratings are a category, not a 0–5 number — GeraClinic never converts them into a numeric average. Some registered providers have not yet been inspected and so carry no rating.

Methodology

Providers are taken directly from the Care Quality Commission register. We group them by local authority and postcode area, and publish a directory page for any authority with at least 80 providers on record and any area with at least 40 — to avoid thin or misleading pages. No estimates or survey data are mixed in. GeraClinic publishes provider (business) records only and never any patient data. Data as of 2026-06-12.
