Frequently asked questions
- What air pollutants does this cover?
- Two of the most health-relevant: PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) and NO2 (nitrogen dioxide). For each of 361 English local authorities we show the maximum modelled annual-mean concentration DEFRA publishes for compliance (2024 calendar year).
- What is the difference between the WHO guideline and the UK limit?
- The WHO 2021 annual air quality guidelines (5 µg/m³ for PM2.5, 10 µg/m³ for NO2) reflect the latest health evidence and are stricter than the UK statutory limits (20 µg/m³ PM2.5, 40 µg/m³ NO2). Many areas meet the UK limit while still exceeding the WHO guideline.
- Where does this data come from?
- DEFRA UK-AIR — Air quality annual mean by Local Authority (NO2 & PM2.5), 2024 (2024 calendar year), produced by Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. GeraClinic shows the DEFRA values verbatim.
